US President Joe Biden instructed the US military forces to conduct airstrikes against Iran-backed militias near the Iraq-Syria border. The action has come after the attacks by Iran-backed militias against US personnel and facilities in Iraq.
The US Department of Defense has confirmed the news of airstrikes by US forces. Clearly, the US carried out the airstrikes on Sunday evening to retaliate against Iran-backed militias.
The militia groups organized unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attacks against US personnel and facilities in Iraq. President Joe Biden has said that he would never allow militants to hurt US personnel serving the country selflessly.
The attacking behavior of the US president is leaving a strong message for the world. Moreover, it depicts the power of the US to safeguard its personnel and facilities.
Biden Gives a Clear Message
The US strikes attacked operational and weapons storage facilities at two locations in Syria and Iraq each. In his released statement, Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said the two locations lie near the border between two war-torn countries.
Kirby said President Biden has given a stern and clear message to those who attacked US interests in Iraq. However, amid the continued tense environment, it may not be the last military action by the US.
Additionally, Kirby added the US administration will try to prevent such attacks by militia groups in the future. Joe Biden refused to confront media to share his views and answer questions on this subject.
Not the First Attack By Biden Administration
The US is taking stringent actions to protect its military forces. At present, Congress is busy reviewing the notification of this operation under the War Powers Act. Besides, it is also working to receive more briefings from the administration.
It is not the first airstrikes ordered by the Biden administration. Earlier in February, the US military conducted its military actions February. At that time, it attacked a site in Syria against two Iranian-backed militia groups.
It was a retaliatory action against rocket attacks on the US forces in the region. Moreover, those airstrikes raised concern among lawmakers as they said Biden didn’t ask for required congressional authorization.
However, the US administration justified the strikes as per Article II of the Constitution and the United Nations charter. Iran condemned the airstrikes by the US military forces.
Moreover, Syria also responded agitatedly, and it declared some people killed in its regions due to strikes. Besides, Iran said the US should not indulge in creating crises and tensions to increase problems in the region.
