South Korea and North Korea leaders have agreed to restore their suspended communication channels. The aim behind this decision is to improve their relations for the welfare of both nations.
Seoul’s presidential Blue House said the two neighboring countries are ready to rebuild their strained ties. And this decision to restore the hotlines is an apt one in this context.
South Korean President Moon Jae-in and his North Korean counterpart, Kim Jong-Un, have been trying to normalize the situation between the two nations. Since April, they have exchanged multiple letters to communicate their thoughts.
They have finally agreed to open their communication channels to strengthen their ties, said Moon’s press secretary, Park Soo-Hyun. North Korea’s state media outlet, KCNA, has also confirmed the restoration of all inter-Korean communication channels from Tuesday at 10 a.m. (0100 GMT).
Efforts to Regain Trust and Foster Progress on Relations
South and North Korea have come forward to regain trust and ensure progress on improving their relations. North Korean state media outlet, KCNA, has declared it an important step in recovering mutual trust and promoting reconciliation.
Both leaders believe this decision to restore communication will benefit both nations on various fronts. As a result, the two nations will improve their relations and see a boom in their developments.
North Korea has not just worked to normalize its relations with South Korea. But it is also making efforts to come close to China to improve its stand in global diplomacy.
Restoration of Communication Lines After a Year of Stalemate
North Korea ended the communication with South Korea in June 2020. The nation decided after a failed second summit in February 2019 between the previous US President Donald Trump and Kim Jong-Un.
South Korean President came forward to mediate between the two leaders, but it didn’t work out. And hence, the cross-border relations between North, South Korea soured badly. Eventually, it resulted in the elimination of communication lines between the two nations.
Moon hopes that the talks between the two neighboring nations will make the US President Joe Biden, opt for negotiations associated with dismantling North Korea’s nuclear & missile programs.
The two Korean nations have announced the decision to restore hotlines at the 68th anniversary of the armistice that ended the 1950-53 Korean War. North Korean President Kim Jong-Un also paid tribute to martyred soldiers and sent gift items to living veterans.
