Greggs has Become the Latest Food Outlet to Face “Temporary Interruptions” Due to Supply Chain Problems

Food businesses in the UK have faced many hurdles due to supply chain problems. Greggs is the latest food business that joins the list of food businesses facing “temporary interruptions” due to supply chain issues.

As supply chain problems hit it, some chicken-based food products are missing from its food outlets. Due to the lack of proper supply of some essential ingredients, Greggs witnesses this issue.

According to Greggs spokesperson, the food business doesn’t face difficulty in supplying chicken bake products. However, the food company finds it difficult to provide all food items on its shelves due to supply issues.

Some Food Items Missing on the Menu

A day before this revelation by the food business, McDonald’s removed milkshake and bottled drinks from its food menu due to supply issues. Greggs spokesperson said they have many food choices for customers as alternatives to some missing food items.

Many food experts say Brexit has led to a labor crisis in the country. According to the British Poultry Council, the food industry is bearing the brunt of Brexit. It said the country’s economy faces supply chain shortages.

Due to this, its economy is facing problems and affecting food businesses. As a result, the summer season sees empty supermarket shelves and fast-food restaurants.

Brexit Creates Problems for Businesses

Around 10,000 lorry drivers are absent from work and it has led to “pingdemic” in the country. Brexit is the main reason for the lack of workers and it has created many problems for businesses.

A business survey conducted earlier this week said the shortage of workers presents many issues on the path of the UK’s economic recovery from coronavirus. Businesses expected the situation to head towards normalcy, but it is not really the case even after two years.

Greggs has not specified the exact nature of its supply chain issues. However, it has highlighted the shortage of workers and blamed Brexit as well as the pandemic for it. Other than Greggs, food outlets, namely Nando’s and KFC, were also forced to shut their food operations due to supply chain issues.

After witnessing the situation, the British Poultry Council has approached the government to allow overseas workers to work in the UK. Currently, the food sector has got 16% vacancies for workers.

Due to supply issues, many businesses have got affected in the UK. As a result, they see a constant dip in their profit. Moreover, they find it challenging to supply the required food items to customers.
