The largest iceberg of the world so far, has broken off the Antarctic ice shelf. Scientists are claiming that this iceberg is about 3 times the size of Indian capital, Delhi, and even bigger than the size of New York’s long Island. According to the reports of European Space Agency, the iceberg has calved off from the Ronne Ice Shelf of Antarctica. And it is now afloat in the Weddell Sea of Antarctica.
This iceberg is having the size of 4,320 sq. km. (1,668 sq miles), with 170 km length and 25 km width. This makes it the largest iceberg of the world, surpassing A-23A iceberg possessing the size of around 3880 sq. km. Scientists are naming it as as A-76 since this is the 76th iceberg from the same area tracked by US Nationwide Ice Middle.
ESA reports, “The iceberg was spotted by the British Antarctic Survey and confirmed by the US National Ice Center using Copernicus Sentinel-1 imagery.”
The breaking of iceberg from the Antarctic coast is a cause of concern for the world. The raising temperatures and global warming has been causing ruptures in the southern ice bed. The southern ice tip is continuously degrading over the time, resulting in the melting of glaciers and ice covers.
And this is not the 1st iceberg to break off from Antarctica.
Before this, recently in February, another iceberg had broken off the same Ronne Ice shelf. That was around 1.5 times the size of Greater Paris.
All of this is also contributing massively to the rising sea levels. Recently, Nature published a story, which stated that the sea levels have gone up by 9 inches since that measured in 1880. It is time the world takes the melting of glaciers seriously and contribute towards reducing global warming significantly.
